Boomerang To Be Merged Into Max
The streaming wars continue to roll on, with consolidation between many of the streaming services now becoming more common as the studios look to save money and audiences reduce the number of platforms they are willing to subscribe to, in order to save money.
This week, Warner Brothers Discovery announced that it would be closing down its Boomerang streaming service and website on September 30th, 2024, with many of Boomerang’s shows and films moving over to Max.
Boomerang offers a wide selection of animated shows and movies featuring well-known characters from established franchises like “Looney Toons”, “Tom & Jerry”, “Flintstones”, and “Scooby Doo”.
Current Boomerang subscribers will converted into Max without ads subscribers once the platform closes down, but at the same price for a limited time. Currently, Boomerang is priced at $6 a month, while the Max with ads-free tier priced at $17.99. If you are subscribed to both platforms, you will also receive a partial refund based on the unused time in your current Boomerang subscription.
Boomerang subscribers should check their emails, as notifications have been sent out to subscribers with details on the changeover.
Following the announcement of the app’s closure, it’s no longer possible to subscribe to Boomerang.
Last month, Warner Brothers Discovery launched a new partnership with Disney, making a new bundle with Hulu and Disney+ available for $16.99/month with ads and $29.99/month without ads.
Roger’s Take: This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise since Boomerang is a niche streaming service, and running multiple platforms is not cost-effective for Warner Brothers Discovery. The additional content from Boomerang on Max will offer more choices for younger audiences and make Max a stronger platform in general. We are likely to see more consolidation within the streaming industry as there are more subscription services available than can be supported.
