For years, there have been rumblings of Disney developing a third “Princess Dairies” film, and today, Anne Hathaway took to social media to confirm that she is indeed returning for the sequel.

In the video, Hathaway counts to three, with clips of herself in the original films.

To go along with the video, the description states:

Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥

Anne Hathaway recently starred in Amazon’s “The Idea Of You,” along with other well-known movies like “The Dark Knight Rises.” She is also going to return for a sequel to “The Devil Wars Prada.”

The original “Princess Diaries” film was released in 2001 and saw her play the role of Mia Thermopolis, who learns she is a princess and it was so successful, a second film was released in 2004 called “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”. Both of these movies are available to stream on Disney+ now.

The upcoming third film is going to be directed by Adele Lim, who has previously written the Disney animated film, “Raya And The Last Dragon”, plus she has directed “Joy Ride” and also worked on a number of shows as a writer/producer on “Star-Crossed”, “One Tree Hill” and “Lethal Weapon”.

“Princess Diaries 3” will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, with executive producers including Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.

Both the official Disney+ and Hulu social media accounts took to Anna’s social media posts to hype up the new film, with Disney+ stating, “Welcome back, Queen of Genovia!” and Hulu adding, “SHUT UP! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!”. However, I suspect it will be going to theatres first before eventually being released on Disney+.

Roger’s Take: It’s great that the third film is now official and is happening.  Disney is leaning back in on established franchises, and this should be an easy win.  It’s not likely to break any box office records, since the previous two movies combined only made over $350 million, but with the second film budget coming in at around $40 million and the first film being even cheaper, this third film is likely going to have a similarly small budget, so won’t need to recoup as much.  But also just as important, this will likely be incredibly popular on Disney+.
