ABC Orders “RJ Decker” Series

20th Television recently developed a new pilot, which was going by the working title of “RJ Decker”, which tells the story of RJ Decker, who is a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colourful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida. The series follows him tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.

Deadline has revealed that ABC has picked up the show for a series order, where it will debut during the midseason of 2025/26 on ABC and Hulu/Hulu On Disney+ in the United States. As with other ABC shows, we should expect to see it also released internationally on Disney+.

The show is based on the 1987 novel “Double Whammy” by Carl Hiaasen, who is an executive producer on the project and is being created by Rob Doherty, who is behind the hit series, “Abbott Elementary”, who is a writer and executive producer on the project.

“RJ Decker” will be played by Scott Speedman, who also stars in the hit ABC show, “Grey’s Anatomy”, with Kevin Rankin playing Aloysius “Wish” Aiken, Adelaide Clemens playing Catherine Delacroix and Bevin Bru as Melody “Mel” Romero. In the pilot, Weruche Opia was playing the role of Shay Bennett; however, that character is going to be recast for the series.

The pilot was apparently well received by the network, which liked the mix of a crime procedural with humour.

While the pilot was shot in North Carolina, it’s unclear if the series will continue to be shot there. The show’s executive producers also include Sarah Timberman and McGuigan, with Speedman serving as a producer.
