“9-1-1: Lonestar” To End After Five Seasons
After five seasons, the popular “9-1-1” spin-off series, “9-1-1: Lonestar” will be coming to an end, with the final episodes of the new season set to debut in early 2025.
The series tells the story of Owen Strand, who was the lone survivor of his Manhattan firehouse on 9/11, and in the wake of the attack, was left with the unenviable task of rebuilding the station. After a similar tragedy strikes a firehouse in Austin, Texas, Owen — along with his troubled firefighter son, T.K. — takes his progressive philosophies of life and firefighting down to the Lone Star State to help them start anew. On the surface, Owen is all about big-city style and swagger, but underneath he struggles with a secret he hides from the world — one that could very well end his life. In the second season, as Owen welcomes the 126’s newest member, Captain Vega, into the fold, he also must face the unexpected arrival of his ex-wife, Gwyneth, who visits Austin to check on their firefighter son, T.K., following the injuries he sustained at the end of last season. All of this occurs as the rescue squad must deal with an emergency that the Texas capital has never encountered before.
Just ahead of the premiere of the fifth and final season, FOX has confirmed that the show won’t return and unlike its parent series, ABC hasn’t picked up the show, since Disney is cutting back on how much general entertainment content it makes.
This will be the last drama series still produced by 20th Television studios for FOX. As all of the other drama series have slowly been cancelled or moved off FOX since the purchase of 20th Century Studios by Disney in 2019.
Fox TV Network President Michael Thorn said in a statement regarding the cancellation:
“From the start, fans have followed the heroic and deeply moving stories of the men and women who make up Austin’s 126, so a huge thanks to one of the greatest creative teams in all of television — Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear — for creating one of the most action-packed dramas anywhere. Now in our final season of the show, we’re set to give it the high-stakes send-off it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable odds and relatable personal struggles, thanks to our incomparable, stellar cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres.”
“9-1-1: Lone Star” is created and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear. Bradley Buecker, who directed the series premiere, also is an executive producer alongside Rashad Raisani, John J. Gray, Angela Bassett, Lowe, Carly Soteras and Wolfe Coleman.
The upcoming final season will consist of 12 episodes and will return on FOX on September 23rd 2024, with new episodes arriving the next day on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+. The series is also released exclusively on Disney+ in many countries including the UK, though no international release date has been announced. The previous seasons are also available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
Roger’s Take: This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, since there had been reports that the cast’s options were coming up and since the purchase of 20th Century Studios, Disney has been making this show at a “deficit”, since the cost of making the show wasn’t being covered by the licensing fee to FOX. The latest season was also delayed a year due to the impact of last summer’s Hollywood strikes.
