When Is “Mufasa: The Lion King” Coming To Disney+?
This December, Disney is releasing a brand new instalment in the popular “The Lion King” franchise, with “Mufasa: The Lion King”, which is a prequel to the 2019 version of the classic story.
The film explores the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands. Rafiki relays the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone, until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” features an all-star roster of talent, including Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Dominique Jennings and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
Blending live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery, the all-new feature film is directed by Barry Jenkins, produced by Adele Romanski & Mark Ceryak, and executive-produced by Peter Tobyansen. Featuring original songs by award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, original score by Dave Metzger and additional music and vocal performances by Lebo M.
When Is “Mufasa: The Lion King” Released?
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is being released exclusively in cinemas around the world on 20th December 2024.
When Will “Mufasa: The Lion King” Be On Disney+?
Currently, no official Disney+ release date has yet been announced.
While during the pandemic, Disney started rushing its movies to Disney+ within weeks of a theatrical release, things have slowly been returning to pre-pandemic times, with Disney committed to giving its films a decent theatrical window to try to make money at the box office.
Because of this, generally now, movies take over one hundred days from their theatrical release before arriving on Disney+. Disney is also trying to extend how much money it makes from a new release by releasing new films on digital platforms like Amazon, Apple, or Fandango to purchase before releasing them in physical media formats like DVD and Blu-Ray.
Based on some of this year’s other major releases like “Deadpool & Wolverine”, “Inside Out 2” and “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”, which all averaged over a hundred days, it’s unlikely we will see “Mufasa: The Lion King” available on Disney+ before the end of March. I wouldn’t be surprised if it arrived on Disney+ just before Easter.
