Veteran Irish Militant To Sue Disney Over FX’s “Say Nothing” Series
Last month, Disney released a brand new limited series from FX called “Say Nothing” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
The nine-episode is a gripping story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Spanning four decades, the series opens with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again.
Telling the story of various Irish Republican Army (IRA) members, Say Nothing explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, the long shadow of radical violence for all affected, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence.
“Say Nothing” is based on book of the same name by Patrick Radden Keefe, which was released in 2018 and was recently ranked #19 on the New York Times’ 100 Best Books of the 21st Century.
However, the release of this new series has led to some new legal issues for Disney as, according to the Irish News, Veteran Irish militant Marian Price has initiated legal proceedings against Disney after she was depicted killing Jean McConville in 1972.
Marian was previously convicted of carrying out a 1973 IRA bombing campaign in London, which included targetting the Old Bailey courts with a bomb that injured over 200 people. Following that attack, Marian, along with her sister, Dolours Price, was sentenced to two life terms in a UK jail, but after a hunger strike resulted in her almost dying, she and her sister were moved to a jail in Ireland, only to be released years later.
Mrs McConville was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA in 1972. Her body was eventually found more than 30 years later at a beach in County Louth in the Republic of Ireland. In the final scene of the series, it shows Dolours being unable to shoot Mrs McConville, and then we see Marian taking the gun from her, followed by a gunshot.
A statement from Price’s solicitor said:
“It is difficult to envisage a more egregious allegation than the one to which has been leveled against our client. Such allegations published on an international scale are not only unjustified, but they are odious insofar as they seek to cause our client immeasurable harm in exchange for greater streaming success. Our client has now been forced to initiate legal proceedings to hold Disney to account for their actions.”
