The Russo Brothers In Talks To Direct Next Two “Avengers” Movies
Back at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, Marvel announced that two “Avengers” movies would close out phase six and the Multiverse saga, with “Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars”.
Since that initial announcement, over the past two years, Marvel Studios has gone through a major restructuring following an explosion of new content arriving on Disney+, resulting in movies and shows falling short of expectation, resulting in Marvel pulling back on the number of new releases to try to improve quality, reduce costs and slow down superhero fatigue.
Both of the Avengers movies have been delayed, and the creative teams have been hired and replaced. “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” is currently scheduled to be released in cinemas on May 1st 2026, and the following year, “Avengers: Secret Wars” is due to arrive on May 7th, 2027.
Shortly before Jonathan Majors’s conviction, who plays the time-travelling villain Kang, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton dropped out of directing Avengers: Kang Dynasty and is working on the Disney+ series Wonder Man and a Shang-Chi sequel. It’s also expected that Marvel might change directions with the use of Kang as the main villain and rename the next “Avengers” movie.
According to THR, the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, are in talks with Marvel Studios to direct the next two “Avengers” movies, “Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars”.
The duo have previously directed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” as well as “Avengers: Endgame.” Thus, they’ve got a proven history of combining characters from within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting in two of the biggest box office hits of all time.
Recently, it was revealed that Shawn Levy, who has previously directed “Free Guy” and the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie, was also in contention for the director’s job for these films.
The Russo Brothers have previously talked about wanting to adapt the “Secret Wars” comic book series, which was originally released in the 1980s and saw the Beyonder bringing together Marvel’s heroes and villains for an epic war on the planet known as Battleworld. Marvel also rebooted the “Secret Wars” in 2015, where all of the heroes and villains are brought together to fight, resulting in a single timeline, removing the different multiverses.
Roger’s Take: Bringing the Russo brothers back for the Avengers movies makes total sense; while their Netflix movies didn’t really hit the market, the combination of Marvel and these brothers has resulted in some amazing films. A brand new creative team behind the movie and a way to wrap up this stage will likely result in a soft reboot of the Marvel timeline, allowing major characters like Iron Man to return and a new introduction of the X-Men. Marvel is also hosting presentations at both this month’s San Diego Comic-Con and next month’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event, so it would make sense that the official announcement is made soon.
