Disney has had great success with live-action adaptations of its classic animated films, with “Beauty And The Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Aladdin” all being huge box office successes.

It looks like Disney is once again looking to its past, as Deadline has revealed that Michael Gracey is currently in negotiations to direct a live-action version of “Tangled”.

The original animated version was released in 2010 and is a modern retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Rapunzel, an innocent young girl who is locked up by her overly protective mother. Her wish to escape into the world outside finally comes true when she meets the good-hearted thief, Flynn.

Michael Gracey is the director of the upcoming biopic, “Better Man”, which is the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams.  However, there is a slight twist in that an animated chimp is used instead.

Prior to “Better Man”, he also directed the smash hit musical, “The Greatest Showman”, which has been a huge success for 20th Century Studios.

The new live-action adaptation currently has a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who previously worked on “Thor: Love And Thunder”.  It is going to be produced by Kristin Burr, and Lucy Kitada will produce for Burr! Productions.

The project is still in the early stages of development, and no casting details have been revealed, nor has there been any indication of when it might begin filming or be released.    While there have been some live-action adaptations, such as “Lady & The Tramp” and “Pinocchio”, released directly onto Disney+, I’d expect “Tangled” would get a theatrical release first.

Roger’s Take:   It shouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Disney wanting to develop a live-action version of one of its most popular modern movies.  While no doubt, many people might be saying “NO” or “Who asked for this?”  I do think, if done well, a new version of “Tangled” could be a massive hit for Disney, but they have to do it correctly and, more importantly, space it away from any other remakes.  Disney’s overcooked this “genre” and done too many of them, so now they just need to cool off, focusing on just making fantastic movies, instead of rushing it.

What do you think of the idea of a “Tangled” live-action remake?  Let me know on social media!
