At the start of this month, the third season of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian” returned to Disney+, which continues the story of a once lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin, who has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.

“The Mandalorian” has been one of the main original shows created for the platform, and in many ways, Grogu, aka Baby Yoda and Mando, are the faces of Disney+.

According to The Wrap, which shared some data that Samba TV has collected for viewers in the United States, where the first episode of the third season was the most popular episode on streaming that week, beating Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and “Murdaugh Murders” shows.

Samba TV is reporting that viewership for the third season premiere is about on par with Star Wars show premieres.  Pulling in just 1.5 million households in the US, which is on par with “The Book Of Boba Fett” but double the number of people who watched the first episode of “Andor”.    However, the amount of people watching the first episode of the third season of “The Mandalorian” is about 28% lower than “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and 35% lower than Marvel’s “Loki”.

It’s important to note, that these streaming numbers only represent the United States, and with Disney+ operating in over 100 countries around the world, the total number of viewers will likely be higher than in previous seasons, due to Disney+ now being available in more countries than two years ago.  By comparison, 1.1 million US households watched the finale of the second season of “The Mandalorian”, so viewership has gone up in the US.  Samba TV collects its viewership data from a panel of over three million households across 25 million TVs.

The Nielsen streaming charts for the first week of March won’t be released for a few more weeks, and had the viewing number for “The Mandalorian” been record-breaking for Disney+; usually, this is announced by Disney.

The series stars Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Amy Sedaris, Emily Swallow and Giancarlo Esposito. The directors of the eight-episode Season 3 include Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Jon Favreau is the showrunner/head writer and serves as an executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck are co-executive producers.
