“Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” Becomes A Hit For Disney+
Earlier this month, Disney released the first episodes of a brand new animated series, “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” on Disney+ around the world.
This new animated series is set after the events of “The Clone Wars,” Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could be the apprentice he is seeking, that will aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.
Recently, Disney announced that the show had already been renewed for a second season, and it looks like fans are enjoying it, as Disney has revealed that the show has been a smash hit for the streaming service.
The first episode hit 4.1 million views globally after 7 days of streaming on Disney+. It’s also currently the #1 trending series on Disney+ in the United States and has ranked as one of the top titles on the Disney+ Top 10 Today every day since its premiere.
Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni said in a statement regarding the viewership numbers:
“I’m very proud of our team as they continue to challenge themselves and raise the bar on our animated shows. They’ve done a fantastic job delivering something new and exciting with this series and we are all really happy that fans are enjoying it.”
The first four episodes of “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” are available to stream on Disney+ now, with new episodes premiering weekly at 12 a.m. PT on Mondays, with the season finale episodes being released at 12 a.m. local time on May the 4th, Star Wars Day.
Roger’s Take: It’s great to see that this animated series has been such a success for Disney+. Animated shows generally perform worse than live-action, since many casual Star Wars fans don’t watch them. It’ll be interesting to see how this show performs as time goes on and if it can recapture the same success of many of the other animated shows like “Rebels”, “Bad Batch” or “Clone Wars”. Personally, I think these shows are a great way to expand the Star Wars universe for die-hard fans, since they can cover stories that wouldn’t be possible in films and more importantly, continue to give that special feeling to the bigger movies.
