Sony Developing “Venom” Animated Film

Over the years, we’ve seen Sony Pictures try many different ways to utilise its existing contract with Marvel to take advantage of its movie rights to “Spider-Man” and other characters.

We’ve seen multiple live-action “Spider-Man” movies, along with villain spin-off films for “Venom”, “Morbius”, and “Kraven”, plus other characters such as “Madame Web”. They’ve also had some big box office success with two animated films, “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” and “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse”.  Plus, later this year, Sony will release a new spin-off live-action series starring Nicholas Cage called “Spider-Noir”.

The success of the animated films and the failure of the spin-off films have led Sony to shift their focus for the next project, as it’s been revealed by THR that Sony Pictures Animation is now working on an animated movie featuring Venom.

This new project will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently helmed “Final Destination: Bloodlines”.

It’s not clear who is going to executive produce the film, but it’s expected that the “Venom” producers, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, will also return.

Tom Hardy previously played Venom in the live-action films and will be returning to work on the new animated project, but its unclear in what capacity it will be, either providing the voice for the character or just as an executive producer.

Over the years, Venom has appeared in many live-action films, including “Spider-Man 3”, along with the “Venom” trilogy that has made almost $2 billion at the box office combined.

With this project still in early development, it will likely be years until this film hits cinemas, and unfortunately, due to the current long-term deals between Sony and Netflix, it might not be years until it could potentially come to Disney+.

Roger’s Take: Personally, I’d love for Sony and Marvel to work out a long-term plan for their plans, maybe keeping the live-action version of “Spider-Man” within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, while letting Sony explore the “Spider-Verse” with the animated films, giving the audience two alternatives that are much easier for the general audience to understand.
