Earlier this year, FX released a brand new limited series called “Shōgun”, which is based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

During today’s quarterly financial results investor call, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that “Shōgun” is “tracking as FX’s most-watched show ever on our streaming platforms”.

He also revealed that the show is “driving the second largest number of signups to our streaming services since 2022, behind only Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This is a great example of how we are successfully reaching wider audiences with our combined linear and streaming ecosystem.”

“The key to our success in streaming, and what consistently brings consumers back for more, is the array of exceptional content we produce that captivates audiences of all ages and backgrounds,”

Back in March, Disney announced that the premiere had garnered 9 million views globally across Hulu and Disney+, based on six days of streaming – making it the No. 1 scripted General Entertainment series premiere globally.

You can watch the entire limited series on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States, with the show also being available on Disney+ internationally.

Roger’s POV:  The success of “Shōgun” really showcases the value of FX to Disney, as this high-quality drama series aimed at adults is able to reach a wide audience but, more importantly, drive subscribers to their platforms.  This is easily one of my favourite shows of the year, and it’s great to see so many other people feel the same.   It also shows how Disney+ can provide some big drama shows that aren’t just Marvel or Star Wars.
