Over the past few years there’s been a lot of reports that Disney is developing a sequel to the hit comedy film, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”, which will see Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow return in the title roles.

Both actresses have been openly talking about the project in recent interviews, and the trades are now reporting that they are in final negotiations to return as Romy and Michele, in addition to being executive producer on the movie.

It’s also been revealed that Tim Federle, will be directing the film, having previously directed the Disney+ Originals “Better Nate Than Never” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”.

The original movie was originally released in 1997 by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures and tells the story of two carefree party girls who reinvent themselves for their 10-year high school reunion. With new wardrobes and wild stories of success, they make a big impression … until a former classmate blabs their real story to everyone! But that’s when Romy and Michele let loose with a surprise of their own … and outrageous results!

Production on the sequel is set to begin in June, potentially in Los Angeles.

The script for the sequel has been written by Robin Schiff, who worked on the original film, along with the hit Netflix series, “Emily In Paris”. Laurence Mark and Barry Kemp are also both producers on the new movie.

It’s unclear if this project will get a theatrical release or if it will be a straight-to-streaming title, but in the meantime, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries around the world.

Roger’s Take: It’s looking very likely that this film will actually happen. Should everything align and production begin this summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this hit screens in 2026.
