Disney has been developing a sequel to the hit comedy film, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”, which will see
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow return in the title roles.

The movie was originally released in 1997 by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures and tells the story of two carefree party girls who reinvent themselves for their 10-year high school reunion. With new wardrobes and wild stories of success, they make a big impression … until a former classmate blabs their real story to everyone! But that’s when Romy and Michele let loose with a surprise of their own … and outrageous results!

During a recent interview to promote her new movie “Daft State”, with People, Mira Sorvino provided an update on the film,

“They’ve done his deal, they’ve done Lisa [Kudrow] and my deals as executive producers. [Original screenwriter Robin Schiff] has written multiple drafts of an amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans.   And they’re just going back and forth, tweaking things here and there, and [there are] rumors of shooting it second quarter next year.  But, it’s not officially greenlit, so I can’t say that it’s officially greenlit,”

Recently, Alan Cumming revealed he was also going to return as Sandy Frink, a geek-turned-billionaire, and Sorvino confirmed that other characters from the original film are also expected to return.

“Almost every single character from the original that was important is coming back.  This is all pending, them making deals, them saying yes, but they’re all in there,” she adds.

The original movie’s storyline was about them going to a High School Reunion, so it’s likely the story would be about another High School reunion, just thirty years later. This film will undoubtedly have plenty of jokes about how things have changed since they were in High School and from the last reunion in 1997, giving some nostalgic feel-good comedy for viewers.

It’s unclear if this project will get a theatrical release or if it will be a straight-to-streaming title, but in the meantime, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
