Alan Cumming Confirms Involvement In “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” Sequel
Disney has been developing a sequel to the hit comedy film, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”, which will see
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow return in the title roles.
The movie was originally released in 1997 by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures and tells the story of two carefree party girls who reinvent themselves for their 10-year high school reunion. With new wardrobes and wild stories of success, they make a big impression … until a former classmate blabs their real story to everyone! But that’s when Romy and Michele let loose with a surprise of their own … and outrageous results!
Over the past few years, Mira Sorvino has spoken on a number of occasions about how the development of the film, including confirmation that the original film’s writer, Robin Schiff, was working on it.
During a recent interview with Alan Cumming for EW to promote “The Traitors”, Alan revealed that he is also set to return for the upcoming film. In the original, Alan played Sandy Frink, who was a geek-turned-billionaire, and while Alan couldn’t say much, he teased his involvement in the project.
“I think what’s great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters. I actually know what the story is, and it’s really good. So I’m excited. I’m so excited to go back to it.”
The original movie’s storyline was about them going to a High School Reunion, so it’s likely the story would be about another High School reunion, just thirty years later. This film will no doubt have plenty of jokes about how things have changed since they were in High School and from the last reunion in 1997, giving some nostalgic feel-good comedy for viewers.
It’s unclear if this project will get a theatrical release or if it will be a straight-to-streaming title, but in the meantime, “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
