Pixar Developing Third “Monsters Inc” Movie
Disney loves to go back into its deep bench of existing franchises for new movies, and according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, Pixar is currently in the stages of early development on a third “Monsters Inc” movie. Disney hasn’t confirmed the news, but with Pixar struggling to balance the success of new originals like “Elio” and “Hoppers” with existing franchises like “Toy Story”, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see another entry in the franchise on the horizon.
Pixar is already developing sequels to “Coco” and “The Incredibles”, with a fifth “Toy Story” movie on the way this summer. With the recent box office failures of some of its original films like “Elio”,
While the last “Monsters Inc” movie, “Monsters University” was released back in 2013, it has gone back to the franchise for two seasons of the Disney+ Original series, “Monsters At Work”. This show takes place the day after the Monsters, Incorporated power plant started harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis, thanks to Mike and Sulley’s discovery that laughter generates ten times more energy than screams. It follows the story of Tylor Tuskmon, an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer until he lands a job at Monsters, Incorporated, and discovers that scaring is out and laughter is in. After Tylor is temporarily reassigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), he must work alongside a misfit bunch of mechanics while setting his sights on becoming a Jokester.
Disney is currently constructing a massive new expansion to its Hollywood Studios theme park at Walt Disney World in Florida, themed around the “Monsters Inc” universe, with a themed area that includes a brand new rollercoaster.
Pixar does take many years to get an animated project from development to our screens, so it will likely be years until we see a third “Monsters Inc” film arrive in cinemas or Disney+.
While we wait, both “Monsters Inc” and “Monsters University”, along with the “Monsters At Work” series, are available to stream on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: I’ve no doubt that Pixar is developing a third “Monsters Inc” film, the franchise has pulled in over a billion dollars at the box office and no doubt has been a merchandise juggernaut. With the continued investment in the franchise, especially with the new themed land under construction at Walt Disney World, by the time that’s open, a new movie might not be far off being released. Pixar has struggled under the leadership of Pete Docter, where too many autobiographical themed stories like “Turning Red”, “Onward”, and “Soul” haven’t clicked with audiences in the same way as we saw with previous generations of Pixar films, so Pixar needs to balance original and existing franchise releases, making a third “Monsters Inc” film very likely.
