“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” – Season 2 – Episodes 1 & 2 | Disney+ Original Review
One of the biggest original shows to be released on Disney+ is “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”, which is based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan.
The second season is based on the second book in the series, “The Sea of Monsters”, and sees Percy Jackson return to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.
The first two episodes of this season are all about setting up the quest for the heroes, while also introducing Tyson as Percy’s brother, who is also a Cyclops. It’s a lovely way to bring this character in and explore the new bond between the half-brothers, with lots of touching moments of them standing up and protecting one another when needed. The story also leans in on Percy’s relationship with both Annabeth and Grover, one potentially becomes more romantic, while the other explores the unique bond of being a best friend.
Throw in a few cameos, such as Lin-Manuel Miranda as “Hermes” and Kristen Schaal, as one of the Gray Sisters, make it a good solid start to the show. However, it did seem a little light on action, bar a dull fight with some Orges, a very short and random charot race, plus an invasion of evil crows, which looked very cheap.
And that’s one of my problems with the first two episodes, it feels like the special effect budget has been reduced, as while there are some solid-looking effects throughout, it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a movie cut up into episodes. There are also rather strange cuts/transitions that feel perfect for commercials to be inserted, which was a little jarring.
One thing you’ll notice with this second season, much like with other shows/films like “Stranger Things” that involve young actors, they grow up very quickly, and that’s very noticeable when jumping from the recap of the first season to the opening scene. Disney really need to crack on with making the third, fourth and fifth seasons of this show as soon as possible, otherwise, they’ll be in their 30s by the time the last season comes out.
Overall: The first two episodes come straight out of the gate in helping set up the main adventure for Percy, without the need to explain too much of how everything within this universe works, since the first season got all of that out of the way. These two episodes are a little light on action, but they help set the tone for the rest of the season. They aren’t the strongest of episodes, but I appreciated that by the end of the second episode, the main storyline was clearly defined and now underway.
Rating: 4 Out Of 5
