“Paradise” Creator Reveals Show Has A Three Season Plan

This week, Disney released the season finale of a political thriller drama series called “Paradise”, which is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.  The series features a very unique situation, with plenty of twists along the way.

The show has been a massive success for Disney, with the premiere opening to an impressive 7 million views in its first week across Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.   Resulting in the show being picked up for a second season.

During a recent interview with the show’s creator and executive producer, Dan Fogelman, he revealed that he has a three-season story in mind for the show, even going back to the early stages of the development of the show:

“OK, I know what I want to do now. It’s going to be a three-season show, I know where it goes. I know what the shape of each season is. I’m going to go rewrite the pilot just to accommodate a little bit of that, and then I’m going to turn it into people who will hopefully want to make it.”

He went on to explain his plans for a second and third season:

I have a plan for three seasons of the show. Without giving away too much, each season of the show is a slightly different show, within the same show with the same characters. The pilot reveals something at the end, and then there’s twists and turns in the course of the season. Then the seventh episode is kind of a standout, standalone episode of the show. As we go into second season, we pivot a little bit, but in a way that I think is very follow-able. But yes, there’s big moves ahead.

The goal at the end of the first season… I get frustrated by television shows that titillate and keep you guessing and have twists and turns, but then don’t give you the answers at the end of your first break going off the air. I want to provide a complete meal by the end of the episode for the audience that’s invested. Any question that people have after the first couple of episodes should be answered at the end of the eighth episode. Then a new question and journey will start that takes us into the second season.

Roger’s Take:  I have absolutely loved watching “Paradise” each week, and it’s one of my favourite shows from the past year, which does make me even more pleased to know they actually have a plan for this show.  We’ve seen too many shows start off, with no clear direction to how long the show is going to run.  Be it like “Lost”, where the show kept getting renewed and the writers ironically got lost in trying to keep the story in line, or alternatively, in way too many shows that have been cancelled without fans ever getting the actual conclusion.  Most shows nowadays only tend to run around three seasons anyway, so with the success of the first season, the chances of that third and final season of “Paradise” are much higher.

The entire first season of “Paradise” is available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
