This Christmas Day, a brand new holiday “Doctor Who” special will be released featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the brand new Doctor, along with the debut of his new companion, Ruby Sunday, who is played by Millie Gibson. The new Christmas episode is called “Doctor Who Holiday Special: The Church on Ruby Road” and will debut on Disney+ around the world and on the BBC in the UK and Ireland.

While we don’t know too much about what the new Christmas special is, since all of the focus is on the upcoming trio of 60th Anniversary specials that’ll be released later this month, which feature David Tennant returning as the Doctor, before Ncuti Gatwa takes over the reins as the Fifteenth Doctor on Christmas Day.

During a recent press event to promote the new 60th Anniversary specials, the showrunner, Russell T Davies, revealed during a Question and Answer session, that Nicola Coughlan is going to be starring in next year’s Christmas special. Nicola has previously starred in “Derry Girls” and “Bridgerton”, and earlier this year, starred in “Barbie” along with the new Doctor.

It was also revealed that Joel Fry, who starred in “Cruella” will also be starring in next year’s Christmas Special.  Russell went onto say:

“Nicola Coughlan at Christmas — not this Christmas, next Christmas. We’re shooting Christmas 2024 now.”

Nicola also took to social media to confirm the news, saying:

Off to the Whoniverse 👽 @russelltdavies63 the loveliest man in the world, thank you so much for asking me to join you on the joy that is Doctor Who and letting me share the screen with the ridiculously brilliant @ncutigatwa, how lucky am I- I’m loving every minute ❤️❤️

While next year’s Christmas Day special is a while off, Russell teased fans with what’s coming up in the new season and specials, which will be coming to our screens soon.

“That Christmas Day episode is gorgeous, it’s absolutely gorgeous. When you cast great actors, the pressure is to live up to them, is to give them stuff that they love. And also stuff that will push them every day.

What is coming up — some of the stories we’ve never done before, the style of which we’ve never done before — we’re doing brand new things on screen. Again, you write this stuff because they’re so good. And they meet that challenge every time. I am literally so excited to show it.”

The upcoming 60th Anniversary specials will premiere on November 25th on Disney+ around the world and on the BBC in the UK and Ireland, with three weeks of specials.
