This coming December, Disney is releasing a brand new animated film based on the classic children’s book “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid”.

The film tells the story of Greg Heffley, who is a scrawny but ambitious kid with an active imagination and big plans to be rich and famous – he just has to survive middle school first. To make matters worse, Greg’s lovable best friend Rowley seems to coast through life and succeed at everything without even trying! As details of his hilarious – and often disastrous – attempts to fit in fill the pages of his journal, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes from standing up for what is right.

This new animated film is based on the first book in the “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” series.  20th Century Studios has already made four live-action films on the book series, many of which are already available on Disney+

During a recent appearance on a book tour in Martinsville, to promote the release of the 16th “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” book , the author of the book series, Jeff Kinney, was interviewed by some local boys and was asked about what’d he thought about the movie “The Long Haul”?

“A lot of people give ‘The Long Haul’ a hard time, and I think it was hard for people, because we had that cast that was so consistent for three movies, then we started with a new cast, and I think that was a little upsetting for people. I thought was fun. I think a road-trip movie is always fun. We’re starting things up again with Disney Plus. …It’s pretty cool to see Greg in that animated 3-D kind of world, so that’s what we’re going to be doing for a while. I don’t think we’re going to be going back to the live action soon.”

The “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” book series has sold more than 200 million copies in print worldwide.  The series has remained on the New York Times bestseller lists since the first book’s publication, for more than 500 weeks total, and more than 350 on the series list. The books are currently available in 76 editions in 64 languages.

While plans are obviously in place to turn more books from the series into new animated films, its really going to depend on how many people watch the latest movie on Disney+  With such a popular book series, with characters kids are familiar with, it does seem like a perfect combination for great new original series of films on Disney+.

“Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” is coming to Disney+ on Friday 3rd December 2021, with several live-action films also available on Disney+.
