Way back at the Disney Investor Day in 2020, Disney Animation announced it was going to be creating a brand new series based on the popular “Moana” film for Disney+.

“Moana” is regularly in the top ten most streamed movies of the week across all streaming platforms and due to that success, during an interview with Disney CEO Bob Iger on CNBC, ahead of today’s quarterly financial results, it was revealed that Disney will be releasing a “Moana” sequel film in cinemas this coming Thanksgiving on November 27th 2024.

Bob Iger stated:

“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise.  And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2″ takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

A first-look teaser trailer has also been released:

The new film is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

Last year, Disney announced it was creating a live-action version of “Moana” and with a run of box office disappointments, shifting a Disney+ series into a major theatrical release, will no doubt make much more money for the company.

With the upcoming Super Bowl event this weekend, I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney uses this opportunity to share a teaser trailer for “Moana 2”, since the project has been in development for so many years.
