Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice | Disney+ / Hulu Original Review

20th Century Studios’ latest original film for Hulu/Disney+ is “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice”, which is an action-comedy about two gangsters and the woman they love trying to survive the most dangerous night of their lives. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s one wild ingredient added to the mix: a time machine.

The movie stars Vince Vaughn as both Nick’s, along with James Marsden as Mike and Eiza González as Alice.  So you’re getting two Vince Vaughns for the price of one, as Nick travels back in time to try to fix what happened, so “Future Nick” acts slightly differently.

Turning two gangsters into heroes is never easy, but it doesn’t take long for you to be rooting for these guys, though I would have preferred the villains to be a little nastier, especially Jimmy Tatro’s character, who comes across as a bit of a loser, while Keith David has a more believable aura as the big bad guy.  There’s also a fun little cameo treat for 80’s action film fans.

One of the things I liked about “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” is how it feels like an action film from the 90s, with a simple plot and plenty of action, with lots of fight scenes and one big shoot-out.  This isn’t going to win any awards, and you certainly don’t need to be paying too much attention to the idea that time travel is involved, but it’s a fun little romp that will entertain for 90 minutes.

It’s a shame that this film didn’t get a theatrical release, as I think it could have been a small sleeper hit, but I also can see how Disney decided that it just wasn’t big enough to justify the additional expense of a traditional advertising campaign, which is a shame, as I’ve no doubt that with some more promotion, it would perform better on Hulu/Disney+.   The film does feel similar to many of the recent Netflix Original films of the same style, which will hopefully find an audience, as this could easily get lost in the shuffle on the platform.

Overall: “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” is a fun action/comedy that delivers what it promises, and it’s an entertaining hour and a half.  Throw in some fun action scenes, great tunes, and a likeable cast, and you’ve got a charming streaming movie for adults.  It’s an easy recommendation from me.

Rating:  4 Out Of 5
