Earlier this year, Disney released the second season of Marvel’s “Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur”, and over the summer, it released a new series of shorts called “Moon Girl’s Lab”.

The series is based on Marvel’s hit comic books, and follows the adventures of 13- year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the city’s Lower East Side from danger.

Last month, the show’s executive producer, Steve Loter, shared a cryptic post on social media with an image of an empty room full of musical instruments asking, “Where’s The Orchestra?” and tagging Disney and the name of the show, hinting that something wasn’t right.

Unfortunately, this week, it was revealed that the show had been cancelled after two seasons and won’t be returning for a third season.

However, there is some good news, as Disney isn’t just going to let the show end on a cliffhanger, as the creative team are still working on some new episodes for the second season, which will drop onto the Disney Channel and Disney+ in February 2025.

The news broke on social media from DisneyToon, which resulted in many of the crew working on the show resharing the news, confirmation that the cancellation is true.

Samantha S Lee, who is a director of the show added:

I love this show and the entire crew.. to the moon and back 🌙♥️ we made something great.

Sixiao Tang, who is a storyboard artist on the show also shared how much they’d enjoyed working on the show:

this show will always have a special place in my heart as my first revisionist+boarding gig. thanks for taking a chance on me and i hope everyone enjoys the last batch!!! it’s been real, moon girl

Storyboard Artist, Jules Bridgers, also said:

Please watch when they drop! This crew was one of the best I’ve gotten the honor to work with and all their hard work shows

While Gabi Rode, who also works at Disney Television Animation, revealed that the show’s future has been known by staff for a while:

What sucks is that a bunch of us at Disney knew about this for so long but couldn’t outright say it. The MoonGirl production area was a ghost town for over a year 🙁

You can still watch the first season, along with half of the second season on Disney+ now.

Roger’s Take:  Unfortunately, I’m not surprised by the news that we won’t be getting more of “Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur”, since I don’t think the show ever really took off as Disney needed it to, even though it was very creative and had a unique art style.

I think the fact that Disney is still planning on releasing a final batch of new episodes is a good thing, especially considering some other shows like “Hailey’s On It” were removed from Disney+ after being cancelled, so the chances of it being removed hopefully have been drastically reduced.  Plus hopefully, they can close of the show with a proper ending.

With Disney drastically cutting back on how much content it creates for its linear channels and Disney+, if a show isn’t pulling in enough viewers, it will pull the plug on projects, which is something it has been doing for decades.  However, it doesn’t really feel like Disney ever really went all in promoting the show, especially once the first season was released and underperformed.
