When the Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, many wondered what would be happening to the Marvel universe that Fox had created, especially Deadpool.  Disney’s Chairman Bob Iger was quick to say during an investor call that “We will continue in that business.  There’s certainly popularity” with those types of films.

During a recent promotional virtual tour for the new Disney+ series “WandaVision”, Marvel Studios President confirmed to Collider that Deadpool is going to be returning with Ryan Reynolds playing the anti-hero.

“[The film] will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Ryan Reynolds also took to Twitter to make fun of the news of Deadpool becoming part of the MCU.

Introducing Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be done in a number of ways, either as “rebooted” version of the character or Disney might just use the “Multiverse” as a way of bringing him, similar to how characters from previous Spider-Man movies are going to be used in the third Spider-Man movie.  With Deadpool’s ability to talk to the audience via the fourth wall, I’m sure they will make a joke of it and we will all just accept it with ease.

With filming on the third film not starting this year, Deadpool 3 will be at least a couple of years away from being released.

The first two Deadpool movies are going to be available on Disney+ internationally via the new “Star” brand, so we should expect the third movie to follow.  While in the US, both movies are available on Disney’s Hulu and is the home of the mature Marvel content.

Are you excited to see Deadpool heading to the MCU?
