Way back at the Disney Investor Day in 2020, Marvel Studios announced a brand new series for Disney+ called “Ironheart”. This series would continue the story of Riri Williams, who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and played by Dominique Thorne.

The series sees Riri return from MIT to her hometown of Chicago in her iron suit and begin to unravel threads that bring danger and adventure right to her doorstep.

Originally, “Ironheart” was supposed to premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2023. However, this didn’t happen because Marvel slowed down its release schedule, since audiences had been worn out by having too many releases close together, and Marvel Studios became distracted by running too many projects at once, reducing the overall quality, plus Disney is trying to save money by reducing its output.

Filming on the show has already wrapped and some footage was also shown to attendees at the D23 Expo event in late 2022, however since then, we’ve heard nothing about the show and even rumors that Disney was even considering scrapping the show.

Brad Winderbaum, who is the executive producer on the new “X-Men ’97”, recently appeared on the Phase Zero podcast to promote the new animated Disney+ series and shared an update on the “Ironheart” series.

He confirmed that the show’s release had been delayed due to Disney pulling back its release schedule to spread things out more.  But Brad also teased that the extra time is being used to allow Marvel Studios to make the show even better.

“Frankly, in all honesty, there was a mandate to kind of create as much as we could for Disney+ as quickly as we could.  And then, there was a shift, and all of a sudden, we have to start spreading our release dates out. So, that really accounts for a lot of the delays. Now, we’re using that time. We’re not sitting idle. So, it stays in the oven. You can bake certain things a little more. It’s actually, I think, ultimately, it’s only going to make things better. But most of it’s just frankly shrapnel from the business.”

Disney has already laid out its plans for Marvel releases in 2024, which includes “Deadpool & Wolverine” in cinemas in July, plus the “WandaVision” spinoff series, “Agatha”, arrives on Disney+ in the Fall, which is drastically much less than we’ve seen in the last few years.

We probably won’t get an update on “Ironheart” for a while. Hopefully, at the D23 Ultimate Fan Event this August, Marvel will give us a new timeline for upcoming releases to give us a better idea of where the MCU is going right now.

While we wait for the “Ironheart” series, you can catch Riri Williams’s debut in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on Disney+ now.
