Lucasfilm Developing New Star Wars Trilogy
Lucasfilm has signed a new deal with Simon Kinberg to develop the next Star Wars trilogy, where he will write and produce episodes ten, eleven and twelve.
Simon has previously worked as a writer and producer on several Marvel films from 20th Century Studios, including “X-Men,” “Logan,” and all three “Deadpool” movies. Other projects Simone has also worked on with 20th Century Studios include “The Martian,” “Mr & Mrs Smith,” and the Kenneth Branagh Agatha Christie film trilogy.
He’s also no stranger to working with Lucasfilm on Star Wars projects including co-creating the animated series, “Star Wars: Rebels” with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. He was also a consultant on “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens”.
No other details on the upcoming films have been revealed, and it isn’t clear if the trilogy will feature a brand new story or just continue on from the previous films.
According to Deadline, this project will go alongside the previously announced Star Wars projects from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover.
Disney hasn’t confirmed any of these details, though it’s possible that it could be revealed at this weekend’s D23 Brazil event or at next year’s Star Wars Celebration in Japan.
Roger’s Take: Over the past few years, Disney has announced that it’s working on many different films, but with only a single film, “Mandalorian & Grogu”, actually going into production, there will likely be much speculation that this project will go nowhere. While Lucasfilm does have lots of plans in place for different movies, especially as it pulls away from creating shows for Disney+ and refocusing on theatrical releases, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some changes in their future plans, such as where Rey Skywalker’s story might go.
