Today, Disney has released the latest instalment in the “Planets Of The Apes” franchise, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”, on digital platforms to purchase, including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.

Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise with this action-adventure spectacle from 20th Century Studios. Set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species — and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

The digital release also comes with a special documentary bonus feature called, “Inside the Forbidden Zone: Making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, which allows viewers to join director Wes Ball, cast and crew as they expand the Planet of the Apes legacy for a new generation. Travel to the outdoor production in Australia, train at Ape School, and discover the practical and motion capture techniques in building a breathtaking Kingdom.

Other bonus features include 14 Deleted/Extended Scenes with optional audio commentary by director Wes Ball.

“Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes” will also be released on physical media, including Blu-Ray, on August 27th 2024.  No Disney+ release date has been announced yet, but I’d guess that it will be closer to the physical media release date, which will allow the movie to make some more money on digital platforms.

Roger’s Take:  Disney continues to set expectations for how quickly we should expect to see movies released on home formats. The movie only came out in cinemas two months ago, but with ticket sales generally slowing after a few weeks, I think Disney’s strategy of giving movies a decent length in cinemas, before releasing on digital platforms seems to be working, rather than following Universal and Paramount in rushing movies to digital within weeks of release.      I’m really looking forward to watching this movie again this week at home.  It’s a fantastic movie and shows how this franchise still has lots of life still in it while highlighting the best and worst of humanity.
