Disney has had great success diving into its vast library for sequels and prequels, and it has also been doing this with its 20th Century Studios back catalogue, with various degrees of success.

The next franchise to get a sequel is “The Devil Wears Prada”, which was originally released by 20th Century Studios in June 2006 and went on to make $326 million at the box office.

“The Devil Wear Prada” told the story of Andy, a young graduate, who travels to New York to start working as an assistant to one of the city’s biggest magazine editors, the cynical Miranda Priestly.

The original movie starred Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, though it’s unclear if the original cast will return.

According to Deadline, Aline Brosh McKenna has been brought onto the project to write a script for the sequel, she previously wrote the original film and has also worked on “Cruella” and “We Brought A Zoo”.

Talks are also apparently underway with the original film’s director, David Frankel, to try to bring him back.  The movie’s original producer, Wendy Finerman, will also be returning.

Earlier this year, in an interview with E! News, Anne Hathaway shared her thoughts on why she didn’t think that “a continuation of that story” was “ever gonna happen.”   And she also said on a previous episode of The View that she didn’t think a Devil Wears Prada was possible.

“I don’t know if there can be [a sequel]. I just think that movie was in a different era. Now everything’s gone so digital and that movie is centered around the concept of producing a physical thing and it’s just, it’s just very different.”

Roger’s Take:  Disney knows that franchises and sequels are generally more successful than original films, but with almost twenty years passing since the first film, it could be an interesting take to see how the magazine has had to adapt to becoming an online business and the stresses that go along with that.  No doubt, many will question the need to bring this back, and even if it were to happen, it could be years until it hits our screens.

While we wait for this potential sequel, you can catch “The Devil Wear Prada” on Max in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
