Disney is currently developing a new live-action remake of its classic animated film, “Lilo & Stitch”, which will be released exclusively on Disney+.

In the original film, which was released in 2002 and told the story of Stitch, a runaway genetic experiment from a faraway planet, who crash lands on Earth and as he wreaks havoc on the Hawaiian Islands, he becomes the mischievous adopted alien “puppy” of an independent little girl named Lilo, and together they learn about loyalty, friendship and ‘ohana, the Hawaiian tradition of the family.

The new live-action version is going to be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who has previously directed the Oscar-nominated film, “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”. The script has been written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, who is working on a previous draft by Mike Van Waes. The film will star Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Billy Magnussen (Aladdin), Sydney Elizebeth Agudong (NCIS) and newcomer Maia Kealoha as the title character, Lilo.

THR has reported that Disney has cast newcomer, Kahiau Machado, to play David Kawena, Nani’s love interest and Lilo’s friend.

Knight Edge Media has also revealed, that Disney has made a change to former CIA agent turned Child Protective Services agent Cobra Bubbles. In the new Disney+ Original film, the character has been changed to Mrs. Kekoa, who will be played by actress Jolene Purdy, who has previously starred in Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” and in Marvel’s “WandaVision” series.  A description of Mrs Kekoa states:

A social worker, a practical, by-the-book kind, and patient woman who checks in regularly with Nani, whom she can tell is struggling to keep her head above water while taking care of her younger sister. However, she can’t help but be alarmed by what she finds at the house, unnerved to think that young Lilo is not receiving the supervision she needs. Later, Mrs. Kekoa has no choice but to look for a satisfactory foster family.

No release date has yet been announced for “Lilo & Stitch”, but in the meantime, you can watch the original animated film on Disney+ now.
