Jimmy Kimmel Signs New One Year Extension With ABC
One of the most popular late-night talk shows is “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, which is currently in its 24th season and filmed at Disney’s iconic El Capitan Entertainment Centre on Hollywood Boulevard at least four times a week.
The show’s future has been in doubt for many years, as Jimmy Kimmel’s current deal is set to expire in May 2026, especially following the recent troubles of the show being temporarily taken off the air over comments about the death of Charlie Kirk, along with continued tensions between President Donald Trump and late-night talk show hosts like Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers. Jimmy has also been very vocal over the past few years about not expecting to extend the deal.
However, the good news is that Jimmy Kimmel has signed a new one-year extension, which will likely be the last of this contract.
According to Bloomberg, the staff at the “Jimmy Kimmel Show” have been informed by the host and during a recent interview, Jimmy revealed that he thinks late-night television will continue to have a future, but the costs of making it, which are estimated to be around $120 million per year, are a significant problem.
“I don’t think there’s a reason for these shows to go away. I think there are different. There are ways. These shows started out because they were a way to get high priced talent for almost free. That was the whole trick. That was the whole reason they started these shows. It was deemed to be promotional. So, the idea that these shows need to cost $120M is crazy,”
Jimmy Kimmel, Erin Irwin, Molly McNearney, Jennifer Sharron and David Craig serve as executive producers; Douglas DeLuca serves as co-executive producer.
Recent episodes of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” are available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States.
Roger’s Take: I’m not surprised that Jimmy Kimmel has signed this extension, as he’s had a lot of support over the last few months following the show being temporarily suspended, and in this way, he gets to sign the show off on his own terms, rather than it look like Disney is dropping the show.
Ultimately, late-night talk shows are having to adapt to a changing landscape, where audiences aren’t tuning in at night in the same way, though YouTube and social media are allowing parts of the show, like the nightly monologue, to reach an even bigger audience. But the cost of making this show would eventually be its downfall.
