Back in 2022, it was revealed that Imagine Documentaries was creating a brand new documentary about Jim Henson, who is the creator of some of the world’s most cherished characters, including classic Muppets like Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy and all of “Sesame Street”’s iconic residents, including Big Bird, Grover, Cookie Monster, and Bert and Ernie. He also created beloved fantasy films like “The Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth,” which included iconic characters and technological advances that pushed the boundaries of the time. Tracing his life and work, the documentary will follow how the brilliant innovator came to shape the childhoods of generations to come.

This new documentary is being produced “with the full participation and cooperation of the Henson family,” according to a release, “and will present a fascinating and intimate look at Jim’s illustrious career creating treasured characters and revolutionizing television and film. With never-before-seen personal archives, the film will give audiences an exciting first-person view into the life of one of the world’s most inspiring and iconoclastic creators through exclusive home movies, photographs, sketches and Henson’s personal diaries.”

The upcoming documentary will be the definitive portrait of Henson, produced with the full participation and cooperation of the Henson family, and will present a fascinating and intimate look at Jim’s illustrious career creating treasured characters and revolutionizing television and film.

On August 27th 2024, Simon & Schuster is releasing a new version of a book called “Jim Henson’s Imagination Illustrated”, which was originally released in 2012.

The book takes readers on a journey into the creative mind of the incomparable Jim Henson, offering a unique look into his daily life and the doodles and inspirations that would become some of the most beloved characters the world has ever known.

The iconic characters and magical lands that sprung from Jim Henson’s imagination have delighted millions of fans around the globe. His immense talents brought audiences new friends in the Muppets and the Fraggles and invited them into the worlds of The Dark Crystal, the Labyrinth, and beyond. This new edition of Imagination Illustrated takes the journal that Henson faithfully kept through much of his career and brings it to life with a trove of visual material, including rare sketches, personal and production photographs, storyboards, doodles, and more.

However, the cover art for the new book includes a brand new cover that features a promotion for a new Disney+ Original called, “Jim Henson: Idea Man”, plus the book will feature a foreword by Ron Howard, who is the director of the new documentary.

Disney hasn’t officially announced the release date for the new “Jim Henson Idea Man” documentary, but with the new version of the book not due out until August and the promotional ad on the cover stating the documentary is “out now”, would seem to indicate the documentary will be released on Disney+ at some point over the next few months.

The upcoming documentary is being executive produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Michael Rosenberg and Disney Original Documentary’s Marjon Javadi. Mark Monroe will serve as the film’s writer-producer, and Paul Crowder will serve as editor-executive producer.

No official release date has been announced, but hopefully, it won’t be too long until we see it released on Disney+.
