Hulu No Longer Moving Forward With New YA Series “Foster Dade”
Last summer, it was revealed that Hulu had ordered a pilot for a brand new mystery YA drama called “Foster Dade”, which is based on Nash Jenkins’ debut novel “Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos”.
Unfortunately, Deadline has revealed that Hulu has passed on the project, making it one of three youth adult pilots that haven’t gotten the go-ahead, as the streaming service tried to fill the void of hit shows like “Tell Me Lies”.
The show was set in 2008 and the present day. It has been described as a sophisticated mystery set at an East Coast boarding school that explores privilege, scandal, sexuality, and masculinity amid the rise of social media, millennial anxiety and pharmaceuticals.
It’s unclear why the show didn’t get the go-ahead, as while the show was considered racy, Hulu does have other shows like this, such as the British hit drama, “Rivals”.
Ultimately, this is the reason why studios run pilots, so they can test the format out on the screen, before investing more money and time into it, plus they can make changes, such as to casting or creative, they deem fit, in order to be successful. It also means they can cut the project if it’s just good enough.
The pilot was developed by “You” co-creator Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran (Life After Life). It is being created by Warner Bros. Television, where Greg’s company, Berlanti Productions, is under an overall deal. Greg was also an executive producer, along with Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Bash Doran, Nash Jenkins, Robbie Rogers, and Donald De Line of De Line Pictures.
While Hulu no longer wants the project, Warner Brothers Television is shopping the show around to other networks and streamers to see if anyone else would be interested in the show.
