The second episode of High School Musical series continues the story of a group of students trying to put on a Musical version of the original movie.   With this episode focusing on them reading through the script, which leads to more issues between the love triangle between Ricky, Nini and EJ.

What causes the biggest issue in this episode is when Miss Jess and Carlos try to create more chemistry between the two lead actors, by adding a kiss at the end. As you might expect this doesn’t go down well with EJ, which leads onto a new sub-plot of him showing his jealous, it also brings his cousin into the story more and I like the idea that he might not be completely perfect. It also leads to an interesting alliance going into the next episode.

We also get to see more development of Ricky as a character, where he starts to discover his love for musicals and proving he wants to be apart of the show. And that’s one of the main things from this episode, there is lots of character development across the board as they are are laying seeds for future episodes, such as Miss Jenn having money issues.  This episode is packed with drama.

There are some fantastic musical moments in this episode, including an amazing duet called “Wondering”, which is a highlight of this episode, if not the series. It’s great, how the show is so completely different from the original movie, especially by including new songs.

This episode has a few neat tricks to refer back to the original movie, such as bringing in Gabriella’s Blackberry to inspire the cast and having Ricky practicing his dancing to the video at home.

Much like with the second episode of The Mandalorian, its a little shorter than the pilot, but it allows the episode to have a nice pace and the 30 minute run time felt natural.  This is another great episode and one of the highlights on Disney+.

Rating – 4 out of 5.
