The popular hospital drama series Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most-watched shows on Disney+ and Hulu. It follows a team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial who are faced with life-or-death decisions on a daily basis. They seek comfort from one another and, at times, more than just friendship. Together, they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.

Later this year, the show will be returning for its 21st season later this year and some new details on the upcoming season have been revealed by TVLine.

Jake Borelli, who plays the role of Doctor Levi, will be leaving at the end of the next season, following seven years playing the character.  In the last season finale, Levi fails to pursue a peds fellowship and in the next season, we will see the character wrap up his story.

Also set to leave in the next season will be Midori Francis, who plays the intern Mika Yasuda.  Both of these characters represent the LGBTQ+ community, and to counter these characters’ leaving the show, a new gay chaplain is apparently going to be introduced. However, no more details about who is going to be playing them or what storylines they’ll be involved with have been revealed.

Due to budget cuts and a general reduction in spending on general entertainment, “Grey’s Anatomy”, regardless of its popularity, is still having to make cuts, including reducing the number of series regulars and also reducing how many episodes some of the more established characters appear in, to save money.  By bringing in newer actors, this is often much cheaper, as traditionally, the longer an actor is involved in a series, the more they get paid.

Recently, it was reported that Ellen Pompeo would be increasing the number of episodes she will be appearing in, following a reduced role in the past couple of seasons due to filming another show for ABC Signature Studios.

Following the cancellation of the spin-off series, “Station 19”, Jason George, who plays Bailey’s husband, Ben, will also be hanging up his firefighter outfit and returning as a series regular.

Roger’s Take:  Honestly, I’m not surprised Jake’s character is being written out of the show, as he hasn’t had any decent storylines for years and seems to be bumbling along, being grumpy to the interns and an unnecessary character.    I also hope the new character being introduced has some more interesting storylines and isn’t just there to make up the numbers.

You can watch all of the previous seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the US and on Disney+ internationally.
