FX’s “English Teacher” Cancelled After Two Seasons
The FX comedy series “English Teacher” won’t be returning for a third season, as Deadline revealed the show has been cancelled.
“English Teacher” is a comedy series created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, in which he stars as “Evan Marquez,” a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school. Over the first season, Evan navigates his relationships, his students and his fellow faculty and tries to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?
The first season of “English Teacher” was released on FX, Hulu and Disney+ in 2024, while the second season arrived on those platforms earlier this year.
“English Teacher’s” first season has received three Critics’ Choice Awards nominations, including Best Comedy Series, and four nominations for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Best New Scripted Series. The show has also received two Writers Guild Award nominations for New Series and Episodic Comedy. It is one of the best-reviewed shows of the year, earning a spot on numerous critics’ year-end Top 10 lists, including being rated the #1 Best Show of the Year by both Decider and Consequence. “English Teacher’s” first season has a Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh score of 98% and a Metacritic Must Watch score of 83. While the second season also had a Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh score of 100%
The series also starred Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher. It was created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, FX’s “English Teacher” was executive produced by Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender and Zach Dunn.
Both seasons of “English Teacher” are available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
As with any show that has been cancelled, if you haven’t seen it yet or want to watch it again, I’d recommend watching it as soon as possible, as cancelled shows are often eventually removed from Disney’s streaming platforms to save themselves money.
Roger’s Take: It’s a shame that this comedy series wasn’t given more time to find an audience, as comedy shows usually take much longer to do so. I also wonder if the show’s future was put in doubt when last summer, Jon Ebeling, who worked with Brian Jordan Alvarez on “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo”, made allegations of sexual assault. The writing looked on the wall when FX barely promoted the new season when it was released earlier this year.
