Back in the summer of 2021, Disney’s FX announced that it was creating a new spinoff of its popular “American Story” franchise, called “American Sports Story”, which will be a scripted anthological limited series focusing on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.

During the FX panel during this week’s Television Critics Associaton Winter Tour, FX chairman John Landgraf confirmed that the new series is heading towards production and that the scripts are complete.

“We have a fairly complete set of scripts for American Sports Story by Stu Zicherman.  We haven’t dated that.”

The first instalment of “American Sports Story” will be based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery. The limited series will chart the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.

Stu Zicherman will be an executive producer, along with Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall and Brad Falchuk. Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy of Wondery, along with Linda Pizutti Henry and Ira Napoliello of The Boston Globe.

No release date for “American Sports Story” has been announced, but we should expect the series to be released on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
