Former Disney+ Original Series “Nautilus” Finally Getting A US Release
One of the many international original series in development for Disney+ was “Nautilus”, which was inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” which tells the origin story of the iconic Captain Nemo, an Indian prince-turned-crusading scientist.
Unfortunately, during Disney’s cost-cutting measures in 2023, over a hundred original shows and films were removed from the streaming service. However, Disney found another way of making money from some of its unreleased original shows, by selling them onto other platforms, rather than releasing “Nautilus” on its own streaming service, Disney+. With the show being released in late 2024 on Stan in Australia and on Amazon Prime Video in the UK. Another original series in development at the time, “The Spiderwick Chronicles”, was also sold off to another streaming service.
About 18 months ago, it was announced that AMC had picked up the US rights for the show and today, there’s some good news for those wanting to watch the series in the United States as AMC has announced that the series will premiere on June 29th 2025 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC and AMC+. Additional episodes will premiere weekly on Sundays until the thrilling two-episode season finale on Sunday, 17th August 2025.
The captivating series stars Shazad Latif (Black Mirror) as the iconic Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.
“Nautilus” follows Nemo’s (Latif) mission to enact revenge on the East India Mercantile Company, who took everything from him. Nemo audaciously steals a prototype submarine from the penal colony in which he is imprisoned, escaping into the ocean with a motley crew of fellow prisoners. He plans to reach the fabled Viking treasure buried at the Pillars of Halvar. But first, he must win the trust of his crew, and keep out of the clutches of the ruthless East India Mercantile Company, who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
The series also stars Georgia Flood (Apples Never Fall) as Humility Lucas, Céline Menville (Emily in Paris) as Loti and Thierry Fremont (Liaison) as Benoit, with guest appearances from Oscar-nominee Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.
“Nautilus” is developed and produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker, is written and executive produced by James Dormer and is executive produced by Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock and Daisy Gilbert. Cameron Welsh serves as producer and Michael Matthews is the lead director.
The show is still distributed by Disney Entertainment, but has been sold to different outlets around the world.
Roger’s Take: It’s great to see “Nautilus” finally get a US release date, though it’s odd that it took nearly two years from its initial announcement of being sold to AMC to reach people’s screens. Hopefully, some people will check the show out this summer, but I doubt we will see the show return for future seasons unless it does exceedingly well.
