Disney has released a first-look image of the upcoming French Original series, “Kaiser Karl”, which stars Daniel Brühl (“Captain America: Civil War”) as Karl Lagerfeld and will be the first time a series will focus on this iconic figure.

The story begins during the summer of 1972 and traces Lagerfeld’s quest to become the successor of Coco Chanel, who died the year prior, and the most successful French couturier at a time when Yves Saint Laurent was the biggest fashion personality. The rivalry between Lagerfeld and Pierre Bergé (Yves Saint Laurent’s partner) as well as Lagerfeld’s love story with Jacques de Bascher will also be central to the series.

More than a period piece, Kaiser Karl will delve into Lagerfeld’s world and his personality — a character who, while quite famous, cultivated and maintained an air of intense mystery. It will shine a light on the high-end fashion houses of the 70s as well as how Lagerfeld built his unique and sometimes controversial personal brand in a world where appearances are everything.

The six-episode series was filmed in France and produced by Paris-based Gaumont (Lupin). It is based on the biography of the same name by Raphaëlle Bacqué, who is attached to the series alongside writers Isaure Pisani-Ferry (Vampires, Ganglands) and Jennifer Have (Unfaithful, The Red Band Society).

This series will also star Théodore Pellerin (“La Dériff des continents (to the south)”, “Underground”, “Dog of guard”, “Just the end of the world”) in the role of Jacques de Bascher and Arnaud Valois (Révélation Mascule at Festival Lumière 2018; “120 bets”, “La Fille du RER”, “Gypsy rag”, “Size spring”).  

Also starring in the series will be Alex Lutz (“Virex”, “Guy”, “A Romantic Comedy”, “Black Baron”), who will play Pierre Bergé).  Agnes Jaoui (“At Shadow of Girls”, “En Thérapie”, “Length of Others”) will be playing the role of Gaby Aghion, the founder of the Claw Chloé.

No release date has been confirmed for when “Kaiser Karl” will be released on Disney+ in France or around the world.

This is the latest biopic series to take a look at popular French designers, as Disney will be releasing “Cristóbal Balenciaga” on Disney+ in January, and Apple TV+ will be releasing “The New Look” about Christian Dior in February.
