Filming On Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again” Disney+ Series Paused Indefinitely
Earlier this week, filming was disrupted on the upcoming Marvel Studios Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again” due to the actions of picketers from the Writer’s Union Of America, who are on strike to receive better pay and working conditions.
Production was supposed to be resuming today, but now Deadline is reporting that filming has now been suspended indefinitely until the writer’s strike is over. since the production has been targeted on many occasions due to sunrise picketing, which has resulted in Teamster and IATSE Locals workers refusing to cross the picket line.
Similar tactics have been used on several other productions, including Marvel’s “Wonder Man” and FX’s “American Horror Story”. Filming on DC’s “The Penguin” series for Max has also suffered the same problems and has shut down filming until the strike ends.
The new Disney+ series will see some of the actors from the Netflix shows returning, with Charlie Cox returning to the role of Daredevil; Vincent D’Onofrio is also returning as the Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal is reprising his role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. Also starring in the new Disney+ series will be Michael Gandolfini, Arty Froushan, Sandrine Holt, Margarita Levieva and Nikki M. James. The new Disney+ show is being written and executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord. Filming was able to continue during the strike, since the scripts had been completed in advance, but unfortunately, the writers can’t be on set during a strike, so nothing could be edited while filming, though Marvel usually schedules reshoots for its projects anyway.
Disney has been filming “Daredevil: Born Again” in New York for the past three months, and was scheduled to take most of the year to film, since it will be a much larger show than your typical Disney+ show, with eighteen episodes in the season. The show was previously announced to be coming out in 2024, but depending on how long the writer’s strike continues for, this will likely be delayed further, unless Disney decides to split the longer season up into smaller batches, to get what they’ve filmed out on Disney+ a little earlier.
With the picketers successfully shutting down filming on “Daredevil: Born Again”, this will put more pressure on the studios to come back to the table to negotiate a deal with the Writer’s Guild Of America.
