“Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan And Sara” Coming Soon To Hulu & Hulu On Disney+
A brand new documentary called “Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara” is currently in development for a release on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+.
Hulu has ordered the series, which looks a catfishing scheme that entrapped fans of a popular Canadian indie rock duo. It looks at what happened when Tegan Quin (who performs with sister Sara Quin) was hacked in 2011 and her personal files exposed. From there, her identity was stolen and used in a complex catfish scheme to defraud the band’s fans and the community that had developed around Tegan and Sara.
The film revolves around Tegan and Sara Quin, who ascended to global fame as one of the most influential queer indie rock bands of their generation,” a release reads. The Canadian duo “worked hard to cultivate an inclusive and passionate fanbase around the world,” with many fans turning to the band’s community as “the only safe space to come out and be queer during a time when few bands would declare allyship, let alone celebrate their own queer identity.
The film is an examination of the severe ripple effect of mistrust, anxiety, and self-doubt that resulted from Fegan’s (Fake Tegan) actions. Told through Tegan’s own voice, the voices of deceived fans, a trove of visceral communications between fake Tegan and their victims, and the visual history of the band’s behind-the-scenes archive, this documentary feature is a thriller, a caper, a whodunnit and an intimate personal journey rolled into one.
This is a sprawling yet intimate story of how Tegan’s identity was stolen and weaponized in a complex catfish scheme to ensnare members of this community” triggering a “severe ripple effect of mistrust, anxiety and self-doubt.
The documentary is being directed by true-crime specialist Erin Lee Carr and is produced by Elyssa Hess and Jenny Eliscu and exec produced by Tegan and Sara, Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Jon Bardin and Kate Barry for A Story Syndicate production.
“Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara” will be released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ on October 18th 2024, though no international Disney+ release details have been announced. , directed by true-crime specialist Erin Lee Carr, will debut October 18 on the streaming platform.
