Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence Creating New “Miss Piggy” Movie
In the years since Disney purchased the Muppets franchise, we’ve seen a number of different projects released featuring iconic characters such as Kermit The Frog, Fozzie The Bear and Gonzo The Great. Disney has released two movies, a preschool animated series, along with multiple shows.
The next project featuring The Muppets has now been revealed on a recent episode of the “Las Culturistas” podcast, which is hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Jennifer Lawrence let it slip that a new movie is in the early stages of development at Disney, about Miss Piggy, which will also star Emma Stone.
The new project will see both actresses join as executive producers, along with Cole Escola, who has been brought on to write the screenplay. Cole has previously worked on the Tony award-winning Broadway play, “Oh, Mary”.
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.
When asked if they would star in it, she replied:
I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
As with a project still in early development, things can change, and projects don’t always move forward for a variety of different reasons. Since it’s still in the early stages of writing, it might be a few years until we see it released, likely in cinemas before hitting Disney+.
While we wait, you can enjoy Miss Piggy’s adventures in a wide selection of shows and movies on Disney+ now.
Roger’s Take: Disney has been struggling to find a suitable format for “The Muppets”, and they do seem committed to keep trying different ways to keep existing Muppet fans happy, while also appealing to younger audiences. I think the idea of a “Miss Piggy” movie is a fantastic concept, especially if they lean in on her being the ultimate diva. We’ve also never seen a project with her as the main focus, which I think could work with a modern audience, and if they lean in on social trends to bring it up to date.
