Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” Hits $1 Billion Box Office Milestone
This week, one of the latest movies from the Walt Disney Studios, “Lilo & Stitch”, officially crossed the $1 billion dollars mark at the global box office, to become the first Motion Picture Association (MPA) title of 2025 to reach the milestone and cementing its status as the #1 MPA release of the year globally and internationally.
“Lilo & Stitch” tells the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family. It’s a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, which you’ll also find available on Disney+.
The movie opened in cinemas on May 23rd and achieved a record-breaking $183 million in its first four days, setting the largest Memorial Day weekend debut in history. It is one of only two films this year to surpass $400 million at the domestic box office.
So far, the movie has grossed $416.2 million at the domestic box office and an additional $584.8 million internationally. This marks Disney’s fourth film to hit the billion-dollar mark in the last thirteen months, behind “Moana 2”, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
Internationally, “Lilo & Stitch” stands as the #1 MPA international release of 2025 to date. It’s the highest-grossing Disney live-action film of all time in Mexico and is already the highest-grossing film of 2025 across a range of key international markets in Europe (France, Italy, Spain) and Latin America (Brazil, Mexico), in addition to several smaller markets.
It’s important to note that the Chinese animated film, “Ne Zha 2” is currently the biggest hit of the year, with an estimated $1.9 billion box office, however, due to the way China’s box office numbers are reported and it not being released by a studio that is a member of the Motion Picture Association, it’s why “Lilo & Stitch” is classed as technically their only film of the year to hit that magic milestone.
Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement regarding the achievement:
“We knew there was a lot of love for ‘Lilo & Stitch’ with audiences around the world, yet we never take that for granted, and we’re proud of how this new film has connected with people. I’m thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all of our Studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead.”
Following the huge box office success of the film, Disney announced that a sequel is now in development.
The new live-action film’s box office success has reignited global interest in the franchise, driving record viewership of the original animated classic and related content on Disney+, which has been viewed more than 640 million hours on the platform globally.
“Lilo & Stitch” is currently playing in cinemas worldwide and now that it has hit this important milestone, we are likely going to hear of a digital home video release soon, but it’ll likely be a little longer until the movie arrives on Disney+, since it makes sense to delay a home video release until the summer holidays are over to maximise the movies’ box office success
