Disney+ Villains Series “Books Of Enchantment” Cancelled
One of the upcoming projects set to come to Disney+ was a live action version of “Book Of Enchantment”, which was based on the popular Villains book series by Serena Valentino.
Unfortunately it looks like Disney has pulled the plug on this series according to Deadline. The reason seems to be a some issues with the show’s tone and direction
Disney has been working on the show for over a year, with writers spending the last 13 weeks working on scripts. Production was due to begin in the UK next year by ABC Studios.
With this series featuring many classic Disney Villains, its thought that the show was under pressure to get it right and the tone of the series was going in a much darker direction than they wanted.
There had been an effort made recently to try to change the creative direction of the show to keep it going. The Disney+ executives felt the scripts were still to dark and put a stop to the series, since they didn’t want to compromise further the vision of the show by pushing the project in a direction where its creative team was not comfortable going.
This isn’t the first Disney+ series to go through changes due to its tone, a reboot of High Fidelity was moved to Hulu because of its tone and changes to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series resulted in the showrunner leaving the project.
Another issue with the series was the cost, which has been reported to have cost over $4 million already, as the budget was growing. There is still interest in the series by Disney+, so the project could return at a later date.
