Earlier this week, French streaming service, Canal+, which is a streaming content aggregator in France, listed a massive number of Disney+ and Star+ Originals that have an expiration date of May 26th 2023. (Disponible jusqu’au 26/05), indicating that they will be removed from Disney+.  Basically, wiping out the majority of Disney+ Originals from the service.

(Update: The removal date has been delayed until May 27th 2023 for Hulu)

After reaching out to Disney for comment, we weren’t able to get official confirmation of the removals globally but now both major trades, including Deadline are confirming that there will be a mass cutting of original programming across Disney+ globally on May 26th 2023.

This isn’t the first time Disney has removed titles from the services to save money, such as “Queens” and “Rebel”.  Last winter, hundreds of titles were removed from Disney+ worldwide.   Disney wrote these projects off for business purposes, because they were considered to be a failure, either with regards to viewing numbers or how they didn’t bring in new subscribers, but are now basically costing them money, paying out for things like residuals, server costs etc.

Last week, during Disney’s quarterly investors call, Disney’s CFO Christine McCarthy revealed they would be removing more content from its streaming services, which would include Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Star+ and Hotstar.

We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation that you’ve heard Bob discuss. As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion. The charge, which will not be recorded in our segment results, will primarily be recognized in the third quarter as we complete our review and remove the content.

An impairment charge is a term used to account for an asset that is no longer as valuable as it may have once been.

Disney hasn’t officially announced what shows or films might be removed from its streaming services.  Unlike most streaming services, Disney+ doesn’t inform subscribers in advance if titles are going to be removed, so it’s generally a case of only noticing something is gone, when it’s no longer available.  Internationally, many Hulu Originals are also available on Disney+ as Star Originals, so it’s likely these will be removed from Hulu too.

The list of shows and films set to be removed includes:

  • The Mysterious Benedict Society

With Disney looking to cut nearly $2 billion dollars worth of investment, it basically eliminates the majority of Disney+ Originals that aren’t Marvel or Star Wars.   This basically means the concept of future Disney+ Originals has been a huge failure, and it’s likely we are going to be seeing a lot less in the future as Disney has stated it will be making much less.  We will still see shows and films from the studios being released, but not in the way we’ve been used to.

It’s horrible to see so many original shows and films being cut from Disney+.  All the cast and crew put so much effort into making them.  Fans who have loved watching them.  But Disney is wiping them out, to save close to $2 billion dollars, because it overspent, and this is the quickest way to fix the problem, but it is horrible that it’s being done in this way.

If you haven’t watched these shows or films, or want to watch them again, I’d suggest doing so before May 25th.

It’s unclear if these shows and films will be made available on other platforms to stream or purchase in the future, or if they are being completely written off.
