Disney+ To Launch Ad-Supported Tier In More European Countries
Disney has announced that following the successful launch of its ad-supported Disney+ plan in many European countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, more countries across Europe will soon be getting the cheaper tier alternative.
Disney+ will expand its offerings to Finland, the Netherlands and Portugal this October. This expansion will provide consumers with a wider range of subscription choices and greater flexibility to enjoy world-class entertainment, including exclusive original series, blockbuster movies, and binge-worthy shows, all with a plan that suits their needs.
Starting October 17th, consumers in Finland, Portugal, and the Netherlands can choose from the following features in the ‘Standard with Ads’ plan, alongside the ‘Standard’ and ‘Premium’ plans.

“The strong momentum of our ad-supported plan, following its launch last year, underscores the importance of providing consumers with choice, flexibility, and value. As we expand into additional markets, Disney+ continues to offer advertisers a prime opportunity to engage with our premium-streaming platform, featuring our beloved brands and an exceptional line-up of movies and TV series.
We have enhanced our capabilities and are experiencing positive responses to date, including establishing a diverse range of partnerships with L’Oréal Paris, which is sponsoring Series 5 of “The Kardashians”; Uber One, which is collaborating with FX on “The Bear” in the UK; and Chloé fragrances, which is supporting the French original “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” across five countries.”

Roger’s Take: I’m surprised it’s taken this long to roll out the ad-supported tier to more countries, as it does look increasingly like the main way they actually want you to be subscribed. While I personally don’t like having ads, I do like that subscribers have a choice. The only other issue with the introduction of the ad tier is that it means there will be a price increase at the same time.
