Disney is reportedly in negotiations to pick up a new fly-on-the-wall documentary about the recent “Wagatha Chrisite trial”, which was about former English football Captain Wayne Rooney’s wife’s Coleen’s defamation case with Rebekah Vardy.  The case is about Mrs Rooney accusing Mrs Vardy on social media of leaking private stories about her – stemming from her Instagram account – to The Sun.

The documentary has been filming with Coleen Rooney over the past two years during the trial, and this documentary will follow the journey of her legal battle with Rebekah Vardy, which went to trial in May.

According to the Independent, Disney has signed a multi-million pound deal with the Rooney’s to secure the rights to the show as a way of boosting its original UK programming for Disney+.   Netflix, Amazon and Discovery were also in the running for the deal.

The “Wagatha Chrisite trial” has been big news across the United Kingdom and has had lots of media attention.   There are also other shows in development for other networks, but this documentary will be from Coleen’s side.

A source shared to the Sun

‘This is a massive deal for Coleen — in every sense. Since her first damning social media post outing Rebekah, she has remained steadfastly silent.

Now the public will see first hand the toll this whole case took on her, and her family — and why she took the action she took.

Cameras had — and continue to have — unfiltered access to her home. Viewers will see what was going on in Coleen’s head in the weeks after her infamous ‘…it’s Rebekah Vardy’s account’ post. It will be TV dynamite.”

Disney has been trying to increase the amount of original content created in the UK and across Europe. Currently, Disney’s International Content and Operations team plan to create 60 local productions by 2024, continuing to work with outstanding creators and premium producers as part of the company’s commitment to source, develop and produce high-quality original productions from around the globe.  This week alone, Disney has released two football-related documentary series on Disney+, one set in Australia and another, “Welcome To Wrexham”, is about Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds buying the Wrexham football club.

Disney nor Coleen Rooney have made an official statement about this new project yet.

What do you think of Disney+ showing a “Wagatha Chrisite trial” documentary?
