Disney+ Perks Now Offering Free D23 Gold Membership

Disney has announced a new perk for its Disney+ subscribers: a complimentary Gold-level subscription to its official Disney fan club, D23.

The promotion is currently only available to Disney+ subscribers in the United States and is only going to be available for a limited time.  The offer needs to be redeemed by the end of the year.

A D23 Gold subscription includes

  • Digital Gold Member Card (accessible in the D23 app)
  • Access to the digital Disney twenty-three publication
  • Access to D23 Gold Member Events
  • Access to D23 Gold Member Offers and Discounts
  • FanFare Newsletter
  • Access to D23 General Events

This offer is only valid for persons aged 18 years or older who are active Disney+ subscribers with an active Disney+ Perks membership, and who are not current D23 Gold Members.

Currently, Disney offer a Gold Membership to D23 for $49 a year, however, this does include some physical items such as a magnet, pin, Disney Lorcana Promo Card and a certificate.  There are also two more deluxe versions of the Gold plan, which include special merchandise items, which are priced at $99 and $299 a year.  However, it should be noted that the Disney+ Perk Gold offer, doesn’t include any of the physical items.

Disney already offers a free tier of the D23 club, so this Disney+ Perk version is just a slight upgrade to a digital version of the Gold membership.  If you live near to Los Angeles or Orlando, a D23 Gold subscription will likely be more beneficial to you, since there are more special events hosted at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Many years ago, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek spoke about wanting to make Disney+ more like Amazon Prime, with lots of benefits for its members, in the hope of encouraging more brand loyalty and additional sales.  The launch of the Disney+ Perks is aligning with that initial idea, and incorporating a D23 Gold membership into the Perks program seems like an easy and cost-effective bonus, since none of the physical items are included.

I can’t help but think that it might just be easier in the long run for the D23 membership system to be just incorporated directly into Disney+ Perks program, as the benefits for being a D23 member aren’t as good as it used to be.

As you might expect, Disney has tied up existing D23 Gold members, who might want to transfer over to the new free tier.  Basically, if you are a D23 Gold subscriber, you’ll need to cancel your membership, prior to the renewal and then enrol in the D23 Gold Monthly Plan at the time of renewal if you are eligible to do so per these terms. The D23 Gold Monthly Plan shall renew on a monthly basis so long as you remain an active Disney+ subscriber with an active Disney+ Perks membership.

Disney has also stated that if you enrol in the D23 Gold Monthly Plan and elect to upgrade to a paid D23 Gold Plan, prices for such Plans are in full as advertised with no credits for the cancellation of the D23 Gold Monthly Plan.

Also, if your Disney+ subscription and/or your Disney+ Perks membership is cancelled, your D23 Gold Monthly Membership will automatically be cancelled, and your D23 membership will automatically be downgraded to the D23 General Membership Plan.
