Disney+ Original “The Koreans” Begins Production
Disney has announced details on a brand new original series, “The Koreans”, which is a reimagining of the critically acclaimed FX series “The Americans”, which was created by Joe Weisberg, showrun by Joel Fields and Weisberg, and starred Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.
Set during the wave of democratisation and cultural modernisation that swept across South Korea in the early 1990s,
“The Koreans” will follow a middle-class family hiding a treasonous secret. While seemingly ordinary citizens in the eyes of their friends, neighbours, and even their children, both parents are actually elite North Korean spies working to bring down the South from within. Highlighting the stark difference between these two formerly united countries, the series will follow the spies as they wrestle with conflicting feelings of patriotism, loyalty, identity and love, while a ruthless Korean counterintelligence agent draws ever closer to discovering their identities.
Lee Byunghun (Squid Game) and Han Jimin (Heavenly Ever After) star as the undercover spies.
The series is directed by Ahn Gilho (The Glory) and adapted by Park Eunkyo (Made In Korea, Mother) from FX’s “The Americans”.
Production has now begun on the upcoming series, which will stream exclusively on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the United States.
Produced by IMAGINUS and Studio AA, the project brings together top Korean storytelling talent.
The original FX series “The Americans” won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama and was named AFI TV Program of the Year for five consecutive seasons. The full FX series is available to stream on Hulu.
“The Koreans” joins Disney+ APAC’s expanding slate of high‑octane Korean originals, alongside titles such as “Tempest”, “Made in Korea”, and “The Tyrant”.
