Disney Not Moving Forward With “Blossom” Revival
Disney loves going into its archives to bring back franchises that pull on that nostalgic feeling, and recently, it was revealed that Disney’s ABC Signature Studios was looking at reviving the classic ’90s sitcom, “Blossom”.
Back in 2023, Mayim Bialik, who played the title role in the original series, revealed that “All of the cast and the original creator and producers are on board, and we believe a reboot can and should exist once the strike ends.”
However, Mayim has revealed on her Substack that the reboot is no longer moving forward.
It was not for lack of trying.
This is certainly an unusual and somewhat unceremonial way to share this news, but I have enjoyed sharing so many aspects of my life through writing on Substack and what I am about to talk about is a huge part of my life. It’s the reason I have not been in front of the camera in several years.
She went on to explain how the process of a revival of “Blossom”, as the idea came about following her run on the hit comedy series, “The Big Bang Theory”, where she spoke to Don Reo, who created the original show, about finding out where the character would be now, as an adult in the modern world.
So what would Blossom be like 30 years later? Don wrote a draft in one sitting. He said it just flowed out of him. It wasn’t writing so much as it was receiving. He found our characters exactly where many of us find ourselves – funny, lost, wandering, meandering, and torn. The script is beautiful.
However, since she was just about to start work on “Call Me Kat” and “Jeopardy!”, she didn’t have enough time to develop the show, but she tried to lock it in quickly. She also revealed:
In those years I was working on CMK and “Jeopardy,” new executives were in charge and we re-pitched the show. They seemed to love it, understood what we wanted to do, and Don and I felt comfortable to speak about it in the press. We felt certain this was moving forward.
But sadly, they were told the project was “no longer able to be produced”, and Disney didn’t provide details on why. Since Disney owns the show, they might want to do a complete reboot of “Blossom” without Mayim Bialik, who added:
This project is the role I want to play more than any other. Since this all fell apart, my desire to continue to pursue on-camera roles has waned. The constant changing of guards in our industry, the mergers, the insincerity and the increasingly extended periods of time it takes to get answers or contracts completed… It’s not the industry Don and I grew up in, and Blossom felt like my last attempt to try and assert myself as an actress.
While it is possible no one wants a Blossom reboot, I’m pretty certain Disney got this one wrong. The sun is gonna surely shine. Maybe not the way Don and I intended, but this door closed. While we didn’t want it to, we are powerless over every aspect of it except what we know to be true: we loved this possibility with all that we have and we are so so sorry we couldn’t get it to happen.
Roger’s Take: Disney has been reviving plenty of other popular shows from the 1990s, but they must have their reasons for not deciding to move forward with “Blossom”. There could be so many different reasons for the decision. Disney might be thinking about just making a brand new version of “Blossom” for a new generation of kids, or it just doesn’t think there is enough interest from original fans in a revival. Ultimately, we will never know.
