One of the most popular animated series from the Disney Channel could be making a comeback as Disney once again looks to its past to boost its streaming service, Disney+. Since Bob Iger’s return as CEO, he has been very open about wanting to use established franchises to reach a bigger audience, and one of those franchises could be “Gravity Falls.”

The series was originally released back in 2012 and follows twins Dipper and Mabel, who travel to the mysterious town of Gravity Falls in Oregon for their summer vacations but are shocked after they discover some strange occurrences.

“Gravity Falls” ran for just two seasons before the show’s creator Alex Hirsch decided to end the series.  Following his departure, he was very vocal about his frustrations with working with Disney, especially in terms of the censorship to ensure the show was suitable for younger audiences.

Following Alex’s decision to end the show, he has worked with Disney on a number of projects including a graphic novel and the two were in discussions over making a movie, but that never came to be.

Next month, Disney is releasing a brand new book called “The Book of Bill”, which sees the demon that terrorized Gravity Falls coming back from the great beyond to finally tell his side of the story.

However, recently, during an interview with Meredith Roberts, who is the Executive Vice President of Television Animation and Disney Branded Television, she revealed that they are in talks with Alex about a potential revival.

“You know, we’re in conversations with Alex. He’s about to publish a book with Disney on his project. And we also do some shorts. So never say never”.

Obviously, this comment from Meredith should still be taken very loosely and doesn’t necessarily mean anything is confirmed. But with major events like D23 coming up this summer, if there was an announcement, I’m sure fans around the world would love it.

You can watch both seasons of “Gravity Falls” on Disney+ now.

Roger’s Take: It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Disney falling back to one of its most popular shows to try to recapture that magic. There would be a whole new audience that could discover the series, and the Disney Channel could really do with some big, heavy-hitting franchises right now. “Phineas & Ferb” is coming back, so why not “Gravity Falls”?
